Oubaai Golf Course
The Oubaai Golf Course is world champion Ernie Els' only signature golf course in the country and is his self-proclaimed worldwide favourite. Although it is designed to be challenging for even the most avid of golfers, it is also a comfortable play for the less experienced. It is a links course, surrounded by the wild veld grasses of Africa and measuring 6516m from the Pro tees. In true links style, it has been laid out with nine holes out and nine holes back. This layout means that two tee operations are able to be offered; a members-only area on the 1st tee and a visitor's area on the 10th. Each of these has its own clubhouse. Because it is situated along the coast, the winds can present somewhat of a challenge that may or may not work to the players' advantages.
The sizeable fairways are bunkered to ensure fair play, and the greens roll smooth and true. Usually, the greens run at 10 (per stint meter). However, in the event of a tournament, they are speeded up. As with any championship course, the Oubaai is such that it rewards well-played shots and penalises those that are not.
Tee boxes are strategically placed to allow golfers of all levels of expertise the opportunity to get a respectable score.
There are five Par 3's and five Par 5's on the course, demanding that players have a full range of shots 'up their sleeve'. All the greens are well bunkered, encouraging planning and forethought for every shot. The 17th hole, a Par 3, is famous for being the most photographed hole. The lush green is below this hole and the turquoise ocean frames the shot in an impressive display of the South African coastline. Many players are halted mid-shot as a Southern Right or Humpback whale swims past lazily or splashes about in the warm water.
The 6th hole, a Par 3, is backed by the Outeniqua Mountains and requires that players descend to the tee box. Players need to negotiate a 160m-deep gorge to reach the green and then ensure that the steep run-off areas and bunkers are taken into account. The ocean is behind you and the Gwaing River around you as you tee off in these majestic surrounds.
