Pilanesberg National Park

The crater of an ancient volcano is the setting of the game rich Pilanesberg National Park in the North West Province of South Africa. The Pilanesberg National Park exists within the transition zone of the dry Kalahari and wetter Lowveld vegetation, also known as "Bushveld" and because of this transition zone, unique overlaps of mammals, birds and vegetation occur.

The 580km area of the Pilanesberg National Park is home to almost every mammal of Southern Africa, including of the Big Five. This, together with its unique topography and colourful vegetation, makes a visit to this National Park an unforgettable experience.

This game reserve is home to healthy populations of lion, leopard, black and white rhino, elephant and buffalo - Africa's "Big Five" as well as brown hyena, cheetah, sable, giraffe, zebra, hippo and crocodile. Bird watching is excellent with over 300 species recorded.

Visitors can experience the wonders of Pilanesberg in many ways. There are nearly 200 kilometres of excellent quality roads for either self-drives or guided drives, and professional guides operate within the park. Numerous hides and scenic picnic sites enable the tourist to experience the reserve out of the confines of their vehicle. There is a walking trail at Manyane Complex in the east, which offers environmental education whilst enjoying game viewing and bird watching on foot. Also at Manyane is a walk-in aviary with over 80 species of indigenous birds.
