The 5 star Clifftop Game Lodge is situated in the spectacular Waterberg mountains just a 2.5 hour drive from Johannesburg within the malaria free Welgevonden Private Game Reserve. The Waterberg Biosphere's approach to both conservation and community upliftment has been recognised by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
The Welgevonden Game Reserve is the result of a pioneering project begun in 1987 to return farmland to its original wild state. The ecologically sensitive game relocation efforts have resulted in Welgevonden now being home to lion, leopard, elephant, white rhino, cheetah, wild dog, brown hyena, 15 different types of buck, and 30 other species of mammal. The resident bird population at Welgevonden currently exceeds 280 and is on the increase. The Welgevonden Game Reserve is in the process of incorporating neighbouring Marakele National Park and a private reserve which will allow free movement of game across a total of 150 000 hectares.
